Phantom Drive Letter
Phantom Drive Letter
We received a flash drive without a case. It’s a Silicon Motion SM3251Q BA 2GB flash drive w/ Toshiba NAND memory. When inserted into a computer it shows a phantom (grayed out) drive letter. This is the controllers safe mode. After running diagnostics on the flash drive we see the controller is properly ID’ing the NAND memory chip however the Bad Block count is VERY high. That’s probably the cause of failure. Performing an off chip recovery (removing and reading the NAND chip directly) we were able to recover all the data.
