Successful Data Recovery: 128GB Memorex USB Flash Drive

We recently completed a successful data recovery on a 128GB Memorex USB Flash Drive. This standard-looking flash drive came to us with a broken USB connector — a common failure point that can make a drive completely unreadable by any computer.

Inside the Drive: Phison PS2251-70-25 Controller

Internally, this Memorex drive uses a Phison PS2251-70-25 controller, which is a well-known controller found in many budget-friendly USB flash drives. The PS2251-70 series from Phison is a widely used USB 2.0 controller that supports a variety of NAND flash types, and we have extensive experience working with this controller family.

An Unusual NAND Configuration

What made this particular drive interesting from a technical standpoint was its unusual NAND flash configuration. The drive contains a TSOP-48 NAND chip that is packaged in a TSOP-52 housing. This is not something you see every day — typically, a TSOP-48 chip comes in a standard 48-pin package. In this case, the NAND die itself is a 48-pin design, but it has been placed into a wider 52-pin physical package with the extra pins unused.

The Recovery: Broken Connector Repair

The customer’s drive had suffered a broken USB connector, which is one of the most common physical failures we see with flash drives. When the connector breaks, the data remains perfectly intact on the NAND flash chip — but without a working electrical connection, the drive simply will not mount on any computer.

For this recovery, we were able to repair the connection and access the drive’s data through the Phison controller. Once communication was re-established, the drive’s file system was intact and all data was accessible.

The Result: 100% Data Recovery

We are happy to report that we were able to successfully recover all of the data from this 128GB Memorex flash drive. Every file was intact and returned to the customer.
